Hawzu lets you import test cases from a Generic Excel sheet or from a QASE export, and export test cases to multiple formats. This helps with bulk creation, migration from other tools, backups, and offline analysis.
Import and export actions are available directly from the Repository.
Exporting Test Cases
Section titled “Exporting Test Cases”Supported Export Formats
Section titled “Supported Export Formats”Hawzu supports the following export formats:
Excel (.xlsx)
- Best for editing, reporting, and reviews
- Preserves test case structure
- Easy to share with non-technical stakeholders
CSV (.csv)
- Lightweight and widely supported
- Useful for basic analysis
- Limited formatting
JSON (.json)
- Machine-readable format
- Suitable for integrations and migrations
- Preserves full test case structure and metadata
Exporting Selected Test Cases
Section titled “Exporting Selected Test Cases”To export selected test cases:
-
Select one or more test cases in the Repository.
-
Click the Export icon in the bulk actions bar.
-
Choose the required export format — Excel, JSON, or CSV.
As a result:
- A file is downloaded immediately
- The export contains only the selected test cases
- File names include timestamps for easy tracking
Exporting All Test Cases in a Folder
Section titled “Exporting All Test Cases in a Folder”To export every test case in a folder:
-
Select the folder’s Select all checkbox to select all of its test cases.
-
Click the Export icon in the bulk actions bar.
-
Choose the desired format.
Note
Export always acts on the currently selected test cases, so the selection follows the folder you are working in.
What Gets Exported
Section titled “What Gets Exported”Exported data includes:
- Test case title and description
- Folder information
- Priority, severity, test type, automation status
- Preconditions and test steps
- Expected results
- Tags and linked requirements
- Custom fields
- Created and updated metadata
Importing Test Cases
Section titled “Importing Test Cases”Hawzu imports test cases through a guided wizard that supports more than one source, which helps with bulk creation and with migrating from other tools.
Import Sources and Formats
Section titled “Import Sources and Formats”Choose an Import source at the start of the wizard:
- Generic Excel Sheet — an Excel file (
.xlsxor.xls). This source adds a column-mapping step so you can match your spreadsheet columns to Hawzu fields, and a Download template button provides a correctly structured starter file. - QASE — a QASE export in JSON (default), CSV, or XML. A QASE JSON file is detected automatically.
Opening the Import Wizard
Section titled “Opening the Import Wizard”-
Open the Repository inside a project.
-
Open the More actions menu (the three-dot icon) in the repository toolbar.
-
Select Import testcases.
Importing is permission-gated, so Import testcases appears only when your project role allows it.
The Import Wizard
Section titled “The Import Wizard”The wizard moves through up to four stages. The Mapping stage appears only for the Generic Excel source.
-
Source — choose the import source, choose the file format (when it is not fixed by the source), optionally download the Excel template, then drag and drop or browse for your file. A live parse summary shows how many rows were parsed and how many have issues. Select Prepare Mapping (Generic Excel) or Prepare Review (QASE).
-
Mapping (Generic Excel only) — confirm or adjust how each spreadsheet column maps to a Hawzu field. Columns are auto-mapped by matching header names, and Title, Priority, and Severity must be mapped before you continue. Select Continue to Review.
-
Review — validate and confirm. Summary tiles show Ready to import, Rows with issues, Folders to create, and the Required mapping progress, along with a preview of a sample of test cases and any folders that will be created. Select Import N Test Cases.
-
Result — a success screen shows Imported, Folders created, and Rows skipped counts, plus any validation or media-migration notes. Use Import another to run the wizard again, or Close to return to the Repository.
Imported test cases appear in the Repository once processing is complete.
File Expectations
Section titled “File Expectations”When preparing an import file:
- Each row represents a test case (a Generic Excel sheet can also spread steps across rows).
- For Generic Excel, map your columns to Hawzu fields in the Mapping stage; Title, Priority, and Severity must be mapped.
- Custom fields must match configured project custom fields.
- Empty or invalid rows are counted under Rows with issues and skipped during import.
Hawzu supports importing:
- Multiple test steps
- Preconditions
- Gherkin scenarios
- Tags and requirements
- Custom fields
Tip
Use a small sample import first to validate structure before importing large files.
Import Validation
Section titled “Import Validation”The wizard validates your file as you move through it:
- Required fields and required mapping (Title, Priority, and Severity for Generic Excel)
- Field values such as priority, severity, and type
- Custom field compatibility
- File format and structure
Rows that fail validation are reported as Rows with issues during Review and are skipped. Valid rows still import, and the Result screen shows how many were imported and how many were skipped.
Common Use Cases
Section titled “Common Use Cases”Bulk Test Case Creation
Section titled “Bulk Test Case Creation”Create dozens or hundreds of test cases at once using Excel instead of manual entry.
Migration from Other Tools
Section titled “Migration from Other Tools”Export test cases from another tool — for example a QASE export, or a spreadsheet mapped through Generic Excel — and import them into Hawzu.
Backup & Restore
Section titled “Backup & Restore”Regular exports act as offline backups that can be re-imported if needed.
Reporting & Analysis
Section titled “Reporting & Analysis”Export to Excel or CSV for reporting, metrics, and audits.
Best Practices
Section titled “Best Practices”Export
Section titled “Export”- Export before large deletions or changes
- Use filters to export only what you need
- Store backups securely with versioning
Import
Section titled “Import”- Clean data before importing
- Avoid merged cells
- Keep column names consistent
- Import in smaller batches for large datasets
- Review imported test cases after completion
Permissions
Section titled “Permissions”Import and export permissions depend on project roles:
- Project Manager – Full import and export access
- Project Coordinator – Import and export access
- Project Member – Export access only
- Project Viewer – Read-only export access
Custom roles may further restrict or allow import/export actions.
File Size Considerations
Section titled “File Size Considerations”- Large Excel files may take longer to process
- For very large datasets:
- Split imports into smaller files
- Use JSON exports for migrations
- Apply filters before exporting
