Smart Insights

3 min read

Smart Insights is a library of ready-made analytical questions. Instead of configuring a chart, you choose a business question — such as “How fast are we automating our test suite?” — and Hawzu automatically selects the right data source, aggregation, and visualization to answer it.

Use Smart Insights when you want an answer quickly and do not want to decide axes, metrics, or chart types yourself. For fully custom charts, use the Custom Builder instead.

Every insight is framed as a question, not a chart. When you add one, Hawzu builds the underlying chart for you:

  • The data source (Repository, Executions, Defects, and so on) is chosen automatically.
  • The aggregation — how the data is counted, grouped, or trended — is fixed for that question.
  • The visualization — bar, stacked bar, doughnut, trend line, and so on — is selected to suit the answer.

This is the opposite of the Custom Builder, where you pick the data source, fields, and chart type yourself. Smart Insights trades flexibility for speed and lets you focus on the answer.

The Smart Insights view is organized into three parts.

At the top, Hawzu shows insights recommended for your project’s current state. Each recommendation includes a short reason — for example, “16 critical/blocker defects still open” or “75% of tests are still manual”.

Recommendations appear only when Hawzu detects conditions worth acting on, and they change as your project changes. See Recommendations for the full list of signals.

Below the recommendations, insights are grouped into categories that map to the questions QA teams ask — Coverage, Automation, Execution, Quality, Defects, Requirements, Release Health, and Team.

Categories are collapsed by default so the page stays quiet. Select a category header to expand it and browse its insights. See Insight Categories for what each category covers.

Every insight is presented as a card containing:

  • Question — the business question the insight answers, shown as the card’s headline.
  • Description — a short explanation of what the insight shows. For a recommended insight, this is replaced by the reason it was suggested.
  • Add button — adds the insight to the current panel.

When an insight is already in the current panel, its card shows Added and cannot be added again.

  1. Open a panel in Observatory and select Add Insight.

  2. Open the Smart Insights tab.

  3. Expand a category, or pick one of the Based on your project recommendations.

  4. Select Add on the insight you want.

The insight is added to the panel as a chart. You can adjust it later from the chart’s Settings, which allow renaming and changing the visualization.

The Add Insight window has three tabs:

  • Smart Insights — ready-made insights grouped by question (this page).
  • Collections — curated sets of insights added in one click. See Collections.
  • Custom Builder — build a bespoke chart from a data source and fields. See Charts Overview.

If none of the ready-made insights fit, use Request Chart to describe what you need.

Smart Insights is part of Observatory and is available to workspace owners and managers, and to project managers, coordinators, and members. Project viewers do not have access to Observatory.
