Creating Labels

2 min read

You can create labels from the project Labels page or while selecting labels inside supported work items.

Creating labels from the Labels page is best when you are setting up a project or preparing a shared label system. Creating labels from a label picker is best when you notice a useful category while working.

To create a label from the project Labels page:

  1. Open a project
  2. Go to Labels
  3. Click Create Label
  4. Enter a label name
  5. Choose a color
  6. Review the preview
  7. Click Create Label

The label name is required.

Choose a short name that is easy to understand in lists and filters.

Good examples:

  • Regression
  • Payments
  • Mobile
  • Critical Path
  • Sprint 24

Avoid names that are too vague, such as Important or Misc, unless your team has a clear shared meaning for them.

Choose a color that helps the label stand out in the right way.

You can use colors to represent:

  • Product areas
  • Risk levels
  • Teams
  • Release themes
  • Work categories

You can also keep the label transparent for a neutral appearance.

The preview shows how the label will look before you create it.

Use the preview to confirm that the name is readable and the color is easy to recognize.

Labels can also be created from label pickers in supported areas.

You may see a label picker when creating or editing:

  • Test cases
  • Requirements
  • Releases

To create a label from a label picker:

  1. Open the label picker
  2. Search for the label name
  3. If the label does not exist, click Create New Label
  4. Enter the label name
  5. Create the label

When a label is created from a label picker, Hawzu selects it for the item you are working on.

Labels created from usage areas use the default transparent style. You can edit the label color later from the Labels page.

From a label picker, you can:

  • Search labels by name
  • Select one or more labels
  • Remove selected labels
  • Create a new label when your role allows it

Selected labels appear as badges on the item.

Creating labels requires label creation permission.

If you can select existing labels but cannot create new ones, your project role may allow label usage without allowing label creation.

When creating labels:

  • Reuse an existing label before creating a new one
  • Keep naming consistent
  • Use colors intentionally
  • Avoid duplicate labels with similar names
  • Create labels from the Labels page when setting up a planned label system
  • Create labels from usage areas when a new category naturally appears during work
