Managing Labels

2 min read

The project Labels page gives you tools to review, organize, and maintain labels over time.

Use this page to keep labels clean, useful, and consistent across the project.

You can find labels using:

  • Search by name
  • Creation date filter
  • Sort by name
  • Sort by created date
  • Pagination

You can also show or hide table columns so the list focuses on the information you need.

The Labels page shows how often each label is used.

Usage counts may include:

  • Test cases
  • Requirements
  • Releases
  • Executions
  • Defects

Open a label to view more detail. The detail view shows linked test cases, requirements, and releases when the label is used in those areas.

Review usage before renaming, recoloring, or deleting labels.

To edit a label:

  1. Open the project Labels page
  2. Open the label details
  3. Click Edit Label
  4. Update the name or color
  5. Click Save Changes

Renaming or recoloring a label updates how that label appears wherever it is used. The linked work items remain linked to the same label.

You can duplicate a label from the row actions menu.

Duplicating creates a new label with (Copy) added to the name.

The copied label:

  • Has its own separate identity
  • Does not copy usage relationships
  • Can be renamed or recolored after creation

Use duplication when you want a similar label but need it to represent a different category.

You can export label data from the Labels page.

The export includes:

  • Label name
  • Color
  • Test case usage count
  • Requirement usage count
  • Release usage count
  • Execution usage count
  • Defect usage count

Exporting is useful for audits, cleanup, and reviewing label usage outside the application.

Over time, labels can become duplicated or unclear.

Review labels regularly to find:

  • Labels with similar meanings
  • Labels with no usages
  • Labels that should be renamed
  • Labels whose color no longer matches their purpose

Before deleting a label, check its usage so you understand what will be affected.

Your available actions depend on your project role.

Depending on permissions, you may be able to:

  • View label details
  • Edit labels
  • Duplicate labels
  • Export labels
  • Delete labels

When managing labels:

  • Keep label names stable once teams rely on them
  • Use clear names that make sense in filters
  • Review usage before changing a label
  • Duplicate only when the new label means something different
  • Export labels before large cleanup work
  • Remove unused labels when they no longer serve a purpose
