Creating & Managing Observatory Panels Guide
Creating Panels
To create a new panel:
- Navigate to Observatory (from project)
- Click the Create Panel button in the header
- Fill in the panel details:
Panel Title (Required):
- Descriptive name for the panel
- Example: “Release Metrics Dashboard”, “Test Execution Analytics”
- Should clearly indicate the panel’s purpose
Description (Optional):
- Brief explanation of what the panel visualizes
- Example: “Track release progress, test execution status, and defect trends”
- Helps team members understand the panel’s purpose
- Click Create to create the panel
Panel Creation Best Practices
- Clear Naming: Use descriptive titles that indicate purpose
- Add Descriptions: Include descriptions to explain panel purpose
- Thematic Grouping: Plan panels around themes or use cases
- Consider Audience: Create panels for specific audiences (QA, Dev, Management)
Editing Panels
To edit a panel:
- Click the Actions menu (three dots) on a panel card
- Select Edit Panel
- Modify the fields:
- Title: Update panel title
- Description: Update description
- Click Update Panel to save changes
Note: Editing a panel does not affect its charts. Only the panel metadata (title and description) is updated.
Deleting Panels
To delete a panel:
- Click the Actions menu (three dots) on a panel card
- Select Delete Panel
- Confirm the deletion in the confirmation modal
Warning: Deleting a panel will:
- Remove the panel permanently
- Delete all charts in the panel
- This action cannot be undone
Note: Only delete panels when you’re certain you want to remove all associated charts.
Managing Charts in a Panel
To add a chart:
- Click Add Chart in the panel header
- Choose chart creation method (Smart Insights or Custom Builder)
- Configure the chart
- Chart is added to the panel
To view a chart:
- Click on a chart to view it
- Charts are interactive and can be zoomed
To edit a chart:
- Use chart actions menu
- Edit title or chart type
- Changes are saved automatically
To delete a chart:
- Use chart actions menu
- Confirm deletion
- Chart is removed from panel
Search and Filter
Searching Panels
Use the search box to find panels by:
- Title
- Description
The search is case-insensitive and matches partial text.
Filtering Panels
Currently, panels can be filtered by search query. Future enhancements may include:
- Filter by chart count
- Filter by creation date
- Filter by tags or categories
Panel Sharing
Sharing Panels
To share a panel:
- Open the panel dashboard
- Copy the panel URL from the browser
- Share the URL with team members
Note: Panel access is controlled by project permissions. Users need appropriate permissions to view panels.
Permissions
Panel management requires:
- View Observatory: View panels list
- Create Panels: Create new panels
- Edit Panels: Modify panel details
- Delete Panels: Remove panels
Permissions are managed at the project level. Contact your project administrator if you need additional permissions.
